Superconductor kit, from $139

Quantum locking: a magnet frozen in mid-air at any angle, even upside down. Needs about half a litre of liquid nitrogen and an adult to pour it. It is the demonstration nobody forgets.

What a parent should know before it arrives.

Written plainly, because these are real magnets and real cryogenics rather than a toy pretending to be science.

    Let the child run the experiment

    Adults pour the nitrogen; the child handles the cooled superconductor, the magnets and the track. That division keeps it safe without turning it into a demonstration they only watch.

    Supervise magnet handling, every time

    These are strong neodymium magnets, not fridge magnets. They can pinch fingers hard, and they will wipe a bank card or disturb a screen if left next to one.

    Let a child pour liquid nitrogen

    Adult job, no exceptions, with gloves and eye protection. It boils at −196 °C and will cause a cold burn on contact with skin.

    Seal nitrogen in a closed container

    One litre of liquid becomes 694 litres of gas. It must stay in a vented dewar or an open flask — never a bottle, never with a lid on.

    Leave the magnets near a child under ten

    Swallowed magnets attract through the gut wall and are a surgical emergency. This is the one risk on this page that has nothing to do with the physics.

Questions

What parents ask before buying.

Where do I actually get liquid nitrogen?
Welding suppliers, industrial gas depots, some universities and many ice-cream makers sell it. It is usually a few pounds a litre and you need about half a litre per session. You will need a vented dewar or vacuum flask to carry it — never a sealed container. The sourcing guide lists supplier types by country and the exact words to use when you ring them.
Is this safe for a ten-year-old?
The magnet kits, yes, with an adult nearby — the risks are pinched fingers and swallowing, both managed by supervision. The superconductor kit is safe for a child to operate but an adult must do all the nitrogen pouring. We would not hand the cryogenic kit to a child under twelve.
Which kit is best for a science fair?
If your fair does not allow liquid nitrogen — or you want zero paperwork — the Magnetic Train kit. If a supervised liquid-nitrogen demonstration is permitted, the Economy Superconductivity Kit is the bigger wow: a real superconductor locked in mid-air. It needs no cryogenics on the day, so it works in a school hall with no supplier run and no risk assessment, and it can be repeated in front of a judge as many times as they want. The superconductor kit is more spectacular but only levitates for a few minutes per cooling.
How long does the levitation last?
The magnet kits levitate indefinitely — there is nothing to run out of. A cooled superconductor holds for roughly five to ten minutes before it warms past its critical temperature, then you top up the nitrogen and go again.
Do we need anything that is not in the box?
For the magnet kits, nothing at all. For the superconductor kit you supply the liquid nitrogen and a vented container to keep it in; everything else — superconductor discs, magnets, track, tweezers and instructions — is included.
Will a child actually understand what is happening?
That is the point of the printed guide. It explains magnetic repulsion, the Meissner effect and flux pinning in plain language with the experiment in front of them. Most ten-year-olds can explain why the magnet floats by the end of the first session; the deeper quantum mechanics is there for when they are ready.
