Dr Boaz Almog
Quantum Levitation was founded by Dr Boaz Almog, a physicist who worked on high-temperature superconductors in the High-Tc Superconductivity Group at Tel Aviv University, in the lab led by Prof. Guy Deutscher.
In October 2011, working with his colleague Mishael Azoulay, he demonstrated a superconducting disc trapped in a magnetic field and held there — quantum locking, shown clearly enough that people could watch it happen rather than take it on trust. The effect had been known to physicists for decades. It had never been shown quite like that.
The demonstration became a TEDGlobal 2012 talk, The levitating superconductor, which has since been watched millions of times and translated into dozens of languages. The disc on that stage carried roughly seventy thousand times its own weight, on a superconducting layer around half a micron thick.
The company grew directly out of that work. The kits we sell use the same superconductor technology, licensed from the university lab where it was developed — which is why the person answering a question about flux pinning is usually the person who ran the experiment.

Guy Deutscher, 1936–2024
Guy Deutscher was an Israeli experimental physicist and Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University, where he spent his entire career after moving from France in 1971. Born in Berlin in 1936, he fled the Nazis with his family to Paris and survived the Vél d’Hiv round-up as a boy. He trained in Pierre-Gilles de Gennes’s Orsay group on superconductivity, published more than 300 papers, and co-authored a landmark paper with Nobel laureate K. Alex Müller on disorder in the cuprate superconductors. His group pioneered the use of Andreev reflection to probe high-temperature superconductors.
Guy was my mentor and PhD supervisor, and a dear friend. He had a rare gift for empowering the people around him — for making them become more. He was one of the greatest physicists I have known, with an intuitive grasp of complex quantum physics and the ability to explain it to anyone. I miss him greatly.
