Quantum Levitators

Same physics in every disc. The guide below picks the right one; the filters narrow the grid.

Which levitator?

Three questions decide it.

Every Quantum Levitator is the same thing: a sealed disc of YBCO superconductor, ready to cool. Diameter decides how far away it reads. Thickness decides how hard it grips the field and how long it floats on one dip of nitrogen. Every one ships warm and dry.

Lift force measured on a 3 × 3 matrix of N52 NdFeB block magnets and extrapolated, ±10%. Float time measured in-house at 25 °C above ring magnets. Carrying weight is approximate, 5–10 mm above the magnet. The Ed Levitator is the measurement version; see its page for the experiment specification. Every levitator needs liquid nitrogen — about half a litre per demonstration.

Lift force

How firmly the disc locks to the field. More newtons means a harder push to move it and a heavier load it will hold.

Floats per dip

Seconds airborne from one dip in liquid nitrogen at room temperature. When it warms past 92 K it settles; dip it again and it is back.

Carries

Extra weight it holds 5–10 mm above the magnet — the number that matters for trains and hanging demonstrations.

Two rules of thumb: buy the medium Standard unless you know why you should not, and if the room is big or the crowd keeps arriving, spend on diameter and duration before force. Download the comparison chart (PDF) · Buying six or more? Ask for a quote.
